Sustainable Management of the Forest and Marine Environment in the Philippines

Six partners of DISOP Philippines implement their projects in the forest and lowland areas while three others are in the coastal and marine environment.

Activities under this component included the establishment of nursery seedling production areas for indigenous trees, fruit trees and vegetable crops. In the marine environment, beneficiaries were involved in the survey, installation and guarding of the marine protected areas. All these protection and conservation activities were reinforced with environmental information and education campaign (IEC) materials which were distributed to their respective communities.

Hence in 2011, our partners were able to sustainably managed 40,440 hectares of forest lands, 1,847 hectares were planted with 1.4 million trees, 45 hectares of bamboos and other tree species were planted in riverbanks and buffer zones. Deployment of "bantay-dagat" to patrol the marine protected areas was also done.

Two of our partners - the Dinagat Island Development Foundation, Inc. in Surigao and the Mag-uugmad Foundation, Inc. in Southern Cebu mobilized the community by organizing a water user's group in the construction of potable water system. In 2011, one water system was constructed in Dinagat island.
